CO2 emissions are becoming increasingly important
In air freight, CO2 emissions are receiving more and more attention. Logistics companies in particular are paying close attention to these values. For good reason: From 2023, European companies with more than €40 million in sales or 250 employees must disclose their carbon footprint annually. Saving CO2 is therefore in the interest of both logistics companies and their customers.
The problem is, however, that there are hardly any exact values for the emissions generated, since, for example, the type of aircraft used for a shipment is not known. The values are thus estimated – and turn out to be higher than they actually are.

Why is CO2 tracking important in logistics?
1. Legal requirements
From 2023 onwards, as part of the EU Green Deal, European companies that meet specific criteria (€20 million balance sheet total, €40 million net sales or more than 250 employees) have a reporting obligation regarding their environmental and social efforts. The concept of “dual materiality” plays a central role here. Accordingly, the companies concerned must not only state, “[…] how sustainability issues affect their business, but also how their business affects people and the environment.” In addition, specific reports must be provided on the sustainability strategy, its goals and implementation. In order to verify whether the reports of the companies also correspond to the truth, auditing for sustainability reporting is also to be introduced from 2023. For logisticians and companies that deliver their goods or have them delivered worldwide, it is therefore becoming important to be able to calculate the exact CO2 emissions. Does this also apply to the air freight industry?
2. CO2 emissions from air freight
Is air freight a climate killer? Basically, airplanes continue to generate too many CO2 emissions compared to other transportation options such as ship or rail, even though airplanes are used much less frequently in logistics by comparison. However, the situation becomes more critical if we look at the development for the next few years: For example, the volume of goods transported by air freight is rising steadily – and so are the emissions generated as a result. It is therefore important to pay the necessary attention to the CO2 emissions generated right now. Then alternatives to air freight, especially in terms of speed, do not exist at present or in the near future.
3. Focus on the aircraft type
“You can’t manage what you can’t measure!” This wisdom also applies to CO2 emissions in air freight. Only on the basis of accurate values in real time can supply chains be specifically compared on the basis of the CO2 emissions generated. The central factor in this comparison is the type of aircraft. The more modern the aircraft, and therefore the lower the fuel requirements, the lower the CO2 emissions. Airlines can therefore opt for completely new aircraft models or optimize the existing fleet in terms of propulsion, aerodynamics and weight.
In order to obtain the most accurate value for the CO2 emissions generated by a shipment, it is therefore essential to know the type of aircraft used in addition to the route, load, quantity/weight of goods and speed.

The calculation of CO2 emissions is an integral part of this interface and can be viewed and compared just like all other values. BlueBox System allows you to create reports comparing the performance of airlines on different routes and, in this context, to compare CO2 emissions and time required. So, depending on your requirements, you can make a decision for the optimal supply chain based on detailed data – in this case per CO2 emissions or delivery time, for example.

The technology thus effectively reduces CO2 emissions, also thanks to an innovative monitoring approach, and supports people’s health.
